A collective and poignant creation, Ragazzi di vita, based on Pier Paolo Pasolini’s novel, brings to the stage a chorus of voices and bodies speaking in Roman dialect, spending their days in the outskirts in search of a few coins and fleeting diversions. It is Rome as Pasolini experienced it in the boom years of the 1950s, after arriving in the city burdened by the pain of his expulsion from the Communist Party, his dismissal from teaching, and the separation from his beloved Friuli of youth.
With great fidelity to the original text, Emanuele Trevi has shaped a dramaturgy that restores the incisive power of Pasolini’s language and reinforces the bond between theater, literature, and the identity of a city. Massimo Popolizio’s direction underscores the irrepressible and poetic vitality of the boys, alternating irony and harshness, innocence and abyss. Lino Guanciale, as Pasolini’s alter ego, wanders like a “stranger” through that world, mediating between audience and stage, the guiding thread of all the stories told in the novel.
